Determining the Best Valve For Your Pipe Fitting Needs

Nov 22, 2022

It's tempting to approach finding the right valve as a one size fits all problem, but you need the right valve for your pipe fitting needs. Each pipe will be different, so the valve you use will also change. Let's go over some valve basics and cover the main types.

What Is a Valve?

A valve is a mechanical device that regulates the flow between two pipes. A valve can entirely block this flow or partially obstruct it. Valves are used in every industry from oil and gas distribution to wastewater management. According to Science Direct, a weld neck flange has two parts: a hub and a blade. The flange connects two different pipes while the valve regulates the flow between those pipes.

The Main Types of Valves

  • Ball Valve - A ball valve is incredibly similar to the gate valve, but only requires a quick ninety-degree turn of the handle to block or restart the flow of liquids.

  • Butterfly Valve - A butterfly valve can block and regulate the flow between pipes. Butterfly valves are ideal for large systems due to their compact design.

  • Gate Valve - Gate valves are some of the most common. They use a linear wedge to block the flow between pipes. Gate valves are either on or off and should never be used to regulate the flow like other types of valves.

  • Globe Valve - A globe valve can shut off the flow as well as regulate it. Globe valves are vital for leak-proof systems that need more security than a gate valve offers.

  • Needle Valve - A needle valve is ideal for piping systems that require absolute precision as well as smaller systems.

  • Pinch Valve - A pinch valve regulates the flow of liquids by physically constricting a rubber hose. This is ideal for systems that are moving slurries or suspended solids.

  • Plug valve - A plug valve is ideal for high-pressure systems or systems that need to maintain a vacuum. A plug valve provides quick and efficient on-off flow control.

  • Pressure Relief Valve - A pressure relief valve is a safety device designed to prevent too much pressure or the creation of a vacuum.
